Scottlea is a young congregation of about 80 families and households representing a good cross-section of the St. Catharines community. Our members range in age from children to seniors. We gather for worship every Sunday morning at 9:30 am. and on special Christian holy days such as Good Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Church school and nursery are offered during the worship hour.
Scottlea officially became a congregation on January 12, 1960 when the Presbytery of Niagara approved the group meeting at Scottlea Public School to be a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. The Service of Erection was held at St. Giles Presbyterian church on Feb.14, 1960 with 29 people received into membership.
We celebrate our anniversary on the Sunday closest to the 18th of October as that was the day, in 1959, when about 70 adults and children met for the first Divine Service. This year it will be observed on Sunday Oct.19.
On May 1, 1962 the Presbytery granted the congregation permission to commence its first building project. A new sanctuary was added in 1981 and dedicated on October 18. Our latest addition of a small hall, kitchen, washroom and office all on grade, was begun in the fall of 2006 and dedicated on March 18, 2007.
Building & office news:
We are really enjoying our 'spruced up' sanctuary with the 4 new stained glass windows. Two 'old windows' that were formerly in our entrance doors now adorn our hall windows too. Our new hall is a wonderful place to visit and to enjoy get-togethers! God has richly blessed us!
Facilities are available for rental. Please contact our church office at 905-646-0616.
Should you travel our way or are looking for a church, please visit with us! You will be warmly received by our wonderful Christian family and by our Minister. Travelling through St. Catharines mid-week? Say hello by phone and the Minister will try to see you!
