A September Devotional - September 2005
A neighbour of mine had the most weed-infested lawn all summer long. I knew he wasn't ill because his car was absent from his driveway for long stretches at a time. The garbage hit the curb weekly and his beautiful flowers in the middle of his 'jungle' thrived despite the heat! -- I couldn't guess what was going on!
Then last week, when I wasn't looking, he had the entire messy, weedy lawn pulled up and fresh topsoil put down and an application of that green spray seed we see along new highway construction 'shot' all over his beautifully-groomed and level front yard -- Wow. What a change!
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could change as easily and as dramatically and instantly as that 'lawn', especially when it comes to leaving our past sins behind and starting over again?
Unfortunately, this is seldom possible.
But, here's some good news: God is still cheering us on even when it takes us longer! God is still waiting to embrace us like a kind, waiting parent who misses their wayward child. God has been calling out to us like a concerned shepherd wanting even the least of his flock to be rescued and brought home safely!
We can certainly change our appearance easily enough, but it takes great effort to change the deep-rooted habits that have made our life like that wildly-growing patch of weeds! Talk to God now, and seek out your local church for encouragement and support to help keep the 'weeds' of life under control. (Read Galations 6:7-10)
