A Meditation for Easter and Beyond - April 2006 One day in a small village far away, on Easter morning, when everyone was leaving the church -- you see: in that village they stayed in the church all night before Easter Sunday as if they were guarding Jesus’ tomb, like the soldiers had guarded Jesus’ tomb all night long ago. And then, in the morning when the sun rose bright and beautiful, they sang songs to greet Jesus, who rose from the grave early that Sunday morning long ago.-- it had rained during the night and the rain had left puddles. So, some of the children discovered the fresh puddles and began jumping in them and spraying oneanother, and their beautiful Easter clothes got all wet and spotted with dirt.! And their mothers and fathers got all upset! And soon, the entire village almost broke out in a fight. They were blaming each other’s children and arguing about who started the whole mess ...!! Suddenly, the sky that had been clear and bright before, became dark. A dark shadow rested over the village! Everyone became very quiet. No one could have gotten everyone’s attention like that cloud that just ‘happened’ to pass in front of the sun! It got everyone’s attention! Suddenly they remembered, that they had waited all night for the sun to rise -- just as Jesus rose that Sunday morning long ago. Jesus had died to take away their sins! They had sung beautiful songs in the church to thank Jesus! One by one the people began singing again! More and more people joined in. They sang again because they remembered their night in the church. They also realized that when Jesus had come out of the grave he must have been a little dirty too -- and they were glad that their children had gotten some of that dirt on their best Easter clothes -- just like Jesus did! Jesus must have been quite dirty, because Mary thought he was the gardener! What a wonderful thing God did for the people in that small village that day. God is good! After darkness, God sends the light. Jesus is alive. Alleluiah!
